Heard but not listened to, as the story goes. Erik Satie's pipe-dream, piped into actuality on the cusp of the electrophonic revolution, modulating workplace and home alike.

Tunefulness is a factor of repetition.
Daring you not to listen to it.
Your signal is my noise. Your noise is my signal.
A non-systematic system, proliferating from the middle.
Always changing, always staying the same.
You have to leave it in order to return to it.
Like coming across the same object over and over again, but never in the same location.
Always transposing, always standing still.
You and what it exposes in you are the object.

Housed under the punningly titled In a Sedimental Mood, a set of “sedimentals,” short tracks collected into three sequences—“Extended,” “Medium” and “Compact,” respectively containing 21, 28 and 35 sedimentals—deploy a curiously uniform density, imbricating discretely identifiable, stylistically constrained layers, strangely collapsing a heterogeneity of musical tropes: a flanged single-note ostinato as per Neil Young’s Cinnamon Girl guitar solo, Bacharach-voiced piano chords, baroque harpsichord figuration redolent of psychedelic 60s movies, rising and falling cocktail piano pealing, a glowing detuned fender rhodes perennially arriving off kilter and the sore thumb in the mix, a wildly warbling, sputtering Hammond B3, all kept in time by a delicately struck hi-hat.

The sedimentals decline in duration across the three sequences from sixty-nine seconds to twenty-three, each one queerly fading out, only to be instantly replaced by its successor, sounding more or less the same, starting as if from another location within the mass just departed, yielding the impression of a much larger body of material—ostensibly infinite—from which these samples originate.

A pleasant evasiveness characterizes the fold of similes. The subtly shifting details that distinguish one sedimental from the next are engrossing enough to keep the enterprise from snappily retreating into the background of consciousness, yet of such eventual indifference to attentiveness that the subject of the operation becomes impelled to listen away from the paradoxical progression whose facture the philosopher Zeno would have appreciated: incessantly trajecting while staying resolutely put as motion is cancelled out by an excess of same. Curiously, the individual components in their genericity, as so many spawns of popular gestures, behave centrifugally, discouraging molecular dissection, until a happenstance collusion, melodic or harmonic, promptly reasserts the sedimental’s presence.
